written by news_arabiandefence

Saudia, the national flag carrier of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has taken delivery of its first A321XLR, marking a significant milestone as the first airline in the Middle East and Africa to operate Airbus’ newest extra-long-range single-aisle aircraft.

The aircraft, powered by CFM International LEAP-1A engines, is the first of 15 A321XLRs on order by the airline. This delivery is a cornerstone of Saudia’s comprehensive fleet modernisation program, directly supporting the expansion of its international network in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030. By increasing connectivity and capacity, the A321XLR will support the Kingdom’s ambition to attract over 150 million visitors annually by the end of the decade.

This delivery reinforces a partnership between Airbus and Saudia that spans more than 40 years, beginning with the carrier’s first A300 delivery in 1984. Today, Airbus aircraft remain central to Saudia’s operations as it scales its fleet development and network growth.

Saudia currently serves more than 100 destinations across four continents, with the A321XLR supporting further expansion into new international markets. With a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles, the A321XLR enables Saudia to expand its international destinations with a single-aisle aircraft. These routes would have traditionally been served by larger widebody aircraft, while maintaining a premium guest experience.

The aircraft features a highly premium, low-density configuration with 24 full flat Business Class seats providing direct aisle access, alongside 120 comfortable Economy Class seats. The aircraft features the Airbus Airspace Cabin, bringing a widebody experience to a single-aisle jet. Key features include extra-large overhead bins, advanced lighting systems and one of the quietest cabins in its class.

The A321XLR is the latest evolution of the A320neo Family, designed to meet the global demand for increased range and operational flexibility. It delivers a 30% reduction in fuel burn per seat compared to previous-generation aircraft, lowering CO2 emissions and noise footprints. Today all Airbus aircraft are capable of operating with 50% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with a target to increase to up to 100% SAF capability by 2030, directly supporting the aviation industry’s sustainability goals.

To date, the A320 Family has secured more than 19,900 orders from over 300 customers worldwide, solidifying its position as the world’s most successful commercial aircraft programme.

Airbus demonstrates multi-domain capabilities with Spanish Navy

by news_arabiandefence May 21, 2026
written by news_arabiandefence

Airbus Helicopters and the Spanish Navy successfully completed a tactical flight trial earlier this month in Rota, Spain. The exercise integrated the offshore patrol vessel Rayo with a Spanish Navy H135 helicopter and two different uncrewed aerial systems, the Airbus Flexrotor and Alpha Unmanned Systems´ A900  using the HTeaming solution.

The exercise validated the real-time control of the drone and sharing of imagery between uncrewed systems, helicopters, and naval vessels to establish a multi-domain operational link. This capability allows the ship to access critical information from areas far beyond its own sensor range directly at the combat station.

During the trials, both uncrewed platforms performed take-offs and landings from the moving vessel. A pilot inside the H135 managed the drones during flight using the HTeaming tablet, which proved to be agnostic by successfully integrating the Alpha Unmanned Systems´ A900. The demonstration consisted of a simulated high-speed boat chase during an ISTAR maritime operation, where the Flexrotor and Alpha 900 tracked the target and transmitted live footage to both the helicopter and the ship. The data was integrated into NAIAD (Naval Advanced Integrated Autonomous Vehicles Defence system), Navantia’s tactical integration system for unmanned vehicles, enabling command, control and interoperability of aerial, surface and underwater systems within SCOMBA, the Spanish Navy’s combat management system developed by Navantia.

“Airbus Helicopters is committed to exploring new frontiers in crewed-uncrewed teaming that brings real added value to customers,” said Fernando Lombo, Managing Director of Airbus Helicopters in Spain. “The close collaboration between pioneering companies such as Airbus, Navantia, and Alpha Unmanned Systems, combined with the trust of public entities like the Spanish Navy, shows our shared potential to strengthen Europe’s role as a sovereign leader in defence. By working together, we are proving that we can deliver the innovative technology necessary to secure a leading position on the global stage.”

BERTUĞ Took Part in the Simulation-Supported Phase of EFES 2026

by Arabian Defence May 21, 2026
written by Arabian Defence

The Simulation-Supported Command Post Phase conducted as part of the EFES 2026 Exercise was carried out this year for the first time using the indigenous software solution BERTUĞ.

Developed by ETE Teknoloji with contributions from HAVELSAN, the system was deployed during the phase conducted under the Multinational Joint Warfare Center Command in Istanbul, supporting exercise management, operational simulation, and analysis processes.

BERTUĞ is used as one of the core components of the “Kutup Yıldızı-BERTUĞ” product family, which has been developed for crisis management, war gaming, computer-assisted exercises, and operational experimentation activities.

The system is capable of running multi domain operation scenarios covering land, air, naval, space, and cyber domains within the same simulation environment. Based on information gathered from different data sources, possible scenarios can be generated, courses of action can be analyzed, and outputs can be evaluated for decision-support purposes.

Powered by artificial intelligence and data analytics infrastructure, BERTUĞ can operate in an integrated manner with live data streams, command and control systems, sensor networks, and simulation infrastructures.

The system – which is developed with a micro agent based structural simulation architecture – has previously been used in various computer-assisted exercises and war games involving national and international participants, including NATO related activities.

By enabling the virtual modeling of real world operational and crisis environments, BERTUĞ supports users in preparation, coordination, and decision-making processes.

Its deployment during EFES 2026 demonstrates the expanding operational use of Türkiye’s indigenous solutions in the fields of simulation and multi domain operation technologies.

CSG and FNSS unveil strategic cooperation and introduce the new CFL-120 Karpat combat vehicle

by Arabian Defence May 13, 2026
written by Arabian Defence

Input ingredient 0

Representatives of the CSG group and Turkish company FNSS Savunma Sistemleri presented a strategic cooperation focused on the joint development and production of selected armoured platforms for European and other international markets. At the same time, the new CFL-120 Karpat combat platform was unveiled to the public for the first time, on the opening day of IDEB 2026 in Bratislava. The medium tank, equipped with a 120 mm main gun, combines FNSS expertise in tracked armoured vehicles, CSG’s industrial and manufacturing base in Slovakia, and the firepower of Leonardo’s HITFACT® MkII turret.

The cooperation between CSG and FNSS will focus on the production, sales, and further development of selected armoured platforms and related systems. In the initial phase, the cooperation will primarily cover the CFL-120 Karpat. The scope of cooperation may later be expanded to include additional products. The project is expected to leverage CSG’s existing industrial capacities in Slovakia, gradually introduce technology transfer, involve local suppliers and contribute to the development of industrial know-how. The cooperation is also intended to strengthen both partners’ ability to respond to growing demand for modern tracked armoured vehicles in Europe and other markets.

“Cooperation with FNSS represents an important strategic step for CSG. It combines CSG’s experience in the production, servicing, and support of land systems with FNSS’s technological know-how. Our shared objective is to offer modern and competitive vehicles for customers in Europe and other regions while further developing CSG’s industrial capabilities in the field of combat vehicles,” said Jan Marinov, CEO of CSG Defence.

“This cooperation with CSG reflects a shared understanding of the requirements of the modern battlefield environment and the importance of building resilient industrial partnerships. By combining FNSS’s long-standing expertise in tracked armoured vehicle design, particularly the proven Kaplan medium tank platform, with CSG’s industrial capabilities, CFL-120 Karpat brings together mobility, survivability, firepower and mission adaptability,” said Selim Baybaş, CEO and Board Member of FNSS.”

World premiere of the CFL-120 Karpat medium tank

The ceremonial programme on the first day of the exhibition at CSG group’s stand also included the world premiere of the new CFL-120 Karpat medium tank equipped with Leonardo’s HITFACT® MkII turret and a 120 mm cannon. Depending on customer requirements, the vehicle may also be available in a configuration with a 105 mm weapon. The CFL-120 Karpat is designed as a vehicle offering firepower comparable to that of main battle tanks, while providing lower weight, higher strategic and tactical mobility, and reduced logistical demands. The new vehicle responds to current developments on the land battlefield, where deployment speed, available firepower, crew protection, the ability to operate in a networked environment, and cost-effective operation are becoming increasingly important.

The 120 mm cannon of the HITFACT® MkII turret is compatible with NATO-standard ammunition. The turret design and the placement of ammunition outside the crew compartment increase crew safety in the event of the vehicle being hit. The turret can be equipped with either a manual or automatic loading system. Secondary armament includes a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun and, optionally, an additional 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine gun, or a 40 mm grenade launcher in a remotely controlled weapon station.

The vehicle has a combat weight of up to 34 tonnes, a maximum speed of 70 km/h, and a range of approximately 450 km. It is powered by a diesel engine located at the rear of the hull and features a fully automatic transmission. The rear-mounted powerpack design contributes to improved mobility in difficult terrain, particularly on soft ground and in rugged environments. The CFL-120 Karpat has been designed with an emphasis on crew protection and operational flexibility. It offers the option of installing modular add-on armour in accordance with the STANAG 4569 standard, a protection system against the effects of weapons of mass destruction, an automatic fire extinguishing system, air conditioning and heating.

The CFL-120 Karpat is also equipped with day and thermal observation systems, stabilised commander and gunner sights, a laser rangefinder, and also hunter-killer and killer-killer capability. It also offers the possibility of integrating various types of battle management systems, laser warning systems, and navigation and communication equipment. The platform is therefore prepared for deployment in a modern networked environment. An active protection system effective against drones, guided missiles and anti-armour projectiles can also be integrated into the vehicle.

Growing interest in light combat vehicles with tank-level firepower

The CFL-120 Karpat is based on the proven Kaplan MT vehicle, which FNSS previously developed as a modern medium tank armed with a 105 mm weapon and which is already in service with the Indonesian Army. The Kaplan MT is designed around a combination of high mobility, a low silhouette, a favourable power-to-weight ratio, and a high level of protection in the medium tank category. The CFL-120 Karpat builds on this foundation by integrating the HITFACT® MkII turret with a more powerful weapon, moving it from a conventional fire support vehicle towards a platform capable of engaging armoured targets as well.

The CFL-120 Karpat enters the market at a time when many armed forces are reassessing the structure of their land forces and seeking a balance between heavy main battle tanks, mobile fire support assets and the acquisition and operating costs of military equipment. Medium tanks and fire support vehicles equipped with 120 mm guns offer some users a way to achieve significant firepower while maintaining lower weight and reduced logistical demands.

In addition to European markets, the CFL-120 Karpat may also appeal to allied and non-allied customers modernising their armoured forces while seeking economically sustainable solutions for a broad range of missions. Potential markets may also include selected countries in Asia, the Middle East and Africa, where armed forces often require a combination of firepower, mobility, operational availability, and the ability to operate in demanding terrain conditions.
